Here's a Philco Pedestal Predicta from 1958! So where do I begin with it's various issues! They ALL have them, right! OK, maybe fully restored ones not so much. The CRT is apparently a replacement as far as I can tell. I used my borescope to take a look inside and I was barely able to make out a label on the CRT where I could see some of the words like replacement, 21EAP4 and 21FDP4 as far as I could tell (difficult angle to see anything it all). The FDP4 is a 6V filament sub for the original 2.34V CRT. That makes sense because I could only see the filament light up on my CRT tester when cranked up to 6V. With a couple rejuvenate sequences, the tube is now reading into the "good" emission range (last pic). How good???
As
far as the rest goes, I was able to power it up "somewhat" using a Variac, but I noticed the large "sand covered" tapped power resistor getting very hot. That indicates to me that the capacitors in that circuit are pretty much shorted. And that was with only 35VAC line voltage!
One tube, down near the bottom of the chassis, is supposed to be a 3AU6 but is currently a 6AU6. I have no correct replacement. I did replace the 1B3, and a few other tubes with NOS. I don't know if the inrush thermistor i
s good because I used a jumper to power up the set using the Variac.
The 5.6 Ohm fused resistor is now a 5 Ohm in series with a 1.25A slo-blo fuse. There could be, and probably are, other things that need to be addressed; this IS a Predicta after all!
YOU, the excited new buyer can start by recapping the whole thing for starters!
For some good restoration info google 'philco predicta early television foundation', and other sites. A FREE schematic/photofact, etc, can also be found on line at early televisiondotorg.
Cosmetically, there's a somewhat serious issue. The CRT cover doesn't seem to fit properly (pics 6 and 7). I don't know if it somehow shrank over the years or what. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I don't think so. I can find no info on line about any such issue with these sets.
The way it sits now there's a gap between the cover and the shroud. The metal strap which binds the front and back
together will still keep the screen somewhat in place as you can see. The gold trim is currently not correctly in place either because the new owner will have to pull it all apart and dig into this issue.
The center one of the 3 white knobs is not original. I made it up using 2 different knobs but as you can see, it's not that obvious. Otherwise, the cabinet shows some light wear and the CRT shroud arms have corrosion. I made no attempt to buff them.
I've priced the set accordingly (hundreds lower) compared to other unrestored barber pole models.
Remember, this set is pick up only! NO SHIPPING! I might be able to help by bringing it to a local shipper. This set is also listed elsewhere in the Tampa, FL area. If it sells on 'Mr CL's site first, I'll pull it down here immediately.
The purchaser, upon receipt, might not agree as to my assessment of condition, but that's what it was HERE in MY opinion and it's being sold officially for parts or not working. It may or may not work at all when you get it! NO REFUNDS or RETURNS! If you don't agree to these terms DON'T BUY IT.
